War Under the Mango Tree, a military satire

“Loaded with plenty of whiskey-tango-foxtrot moments, War Under the Mango Tree is a thoroughly entertaining lampoon of the US military machine via a fictionalized mission in an equally fictional Central African country… Not since Catch 22 has a novel this brilliant come along. Five cheeky stars!” —David Edlund, USA Today bestselling author of “Guarding Savage”

“. . . a brilliant satire of the hypocrisy, bureaucracy, banality, and ineptitude of the military. . .scathingly funny and often feels absurd—yet other times, all too real.” —David Aretha, editor of multiple award-winning military books

At a remote military camp in Africa a small detachment of American soldiers and their local allies wage a high-tech manhunt to neutralize the notorious warlord Daniel Odoki and defeat his rebel army. As the quixotic campaign unfolds, a cast of glory seeking generals, rapacious mercenaries and corrupt government officials are determined to finish off Odoki, though each for different reasons. Meanwhile, a hapless band of compatriots, pawns in a mysterious shadow war, race to discover the truth about Odoki before it’s too late.

In the tradition of writers such as Joseph Heller, Kurt Vonnegut and Evelyn Waugh, War Under the Mango Tree exposes the absurdities of modern warfare as it intersects with media culture, technology, politics and big business. The result is a darkly painted satire of war, money and corruption on the far flung reaches of Pax Americana.

Off the Record, A Shae Rose Mystery by Diana Kilpatrick
Off the Record, A Shae Rose Mystery by Diana Kilpatrick

Diana Kilpatrick’s debut novel, “Off the Record”, introduces us to Shae Rose, a feisty and loveable court reporter who lifts the veiled curtain, offering a unique and entertaining peek into the secretive world of deposition court reporting.
– – –
As a busy court reporter in a small Idaho town, Shae Rose ordinarily minds her own business: sharing a duplex with two elderly sisters, Bernice and Clarabelle Darling, riding a Harley on fine sunny summer weekends, and devoting time to her Chihuahua, Hercules. And though she is privy to people’s legal troubles, large and small, she leaves her work at the deposition room door. She wouldn’t dream of meddling.

All of that changes when Shae finds herself embroiled in a case involving a wealthy prominent local family. At first the case appears straightforward, but the court reporter soon discovers dark secrets lay just beneath the sheen of the family’s polished exterior.

Her troubles begin after taking possession of an unusual deposition exhibit. Intrusions and personal attacks ensue, confirming a horrible truth: Shae has become the unwitting central player in events that have been forty years in the making. It doesn’t take long for Shae to realize that someone is willing to do anything to keep the truth from being revealed.

With her career and her very life on the line, she accepts the aid of the handsome Sergeant Jackson Landers. As his investigation heats up, so does Shae’s attraction to Jax, as he’s known by his friends. But can she reveal her suspicions to him?

Will Shae be able to protect herself and those she loves, help solve a mystery, while maintaining her mandated professional confidentiality?

Round House, a deadly side to paradise by Pat Wiley
Available from: Barnes & Noble, iTunes, Amazon

Writer Jack Quinn suspects the secretive, high-security, barbed-wire resort next door is connected to a local captain’s murder. When his research uncovers something far more hideous, Jack finds himself in a race against time to stop what lies beyond the fence.

– – – – – – – – – –

For the second time in his life, writer Jack Quinn finds himself involved in a murder. Within days of arriving at his favorite island retreat on the Caribbean island of Utila, he rescues the crew off a stranded catamaran only to be robbed, beaten, tied up and left for dead by the same two men. When freed by the house caretaker the next morning, he learns the Captain of the catamaran was found murdered on the boat, and that Jack, along with the “supposed two-man crew”, are now the prime suspects.

A new twist unfolds when Jack finds the popular resort next door to the Round House villa he’s renting has been transformed into a secretive, high-security, barbed-wire enclosure complete with guard towers and armed sentries. A chance meeting with Ned Foster, a scientist from the resort, provides the perfect opportunity for Jack to dig into what lies within.

The doctor claims he’s on the verge of perfecting an experimental life-altering drug that ‘will change life on earth as we know it’ and he wants Jack to document his journey. Despite concerns from friends, Jack agrees to Ned’s lucrative writing contract, but while researching Foster’s background, Jack uncovers a startling and hideous secret.

Risk mounts when false evidence anonymously arrives causing police and locals to suspect Jack as not only complicit in the captain’s murder but connected to the mysterious resort. The unexpected arrival of Jack’s wife sets up a climax filled with twists, turns, and a dramatic conclusion where someone loses their life.

Author Pat Wiley maintains a plot ripe with twists, turns, and suspense up until the end, raising questions about our divided loyalties to science, money, ego and the ones we love.

“Eyewitness” by Pat Wiley, A Jack Quinn Novel

January 31, 2016 by SF Parrott Leave a Comment

Eyewitness, Book 1, Jack Quinn Novel, Pat WileyMy name is Jack Quinn. I’m in prison, awaiting trial for murder on the high seas. The nightmare leading to my arrest began while sailing alone to the island of Bermuda. I swear, with God as my witness, I was coming to aid a boat in distress. I am writing this in the hope someone may know something––anything to help prove I’m innocent.

***

Freelance writer, Jack Quinn, has lost everything – his job, his life savings and now his freedom. What turned out to be an opportunity to fulfill his dream of sailing single- handed from New England to Bermuda has transformed into a nightmare.

Barely surviving a hurricane, Jack offers aid to survivors on a dis-masted sailboat. But something is wrong. After arriving back to the mainland, Jack’s arrested and finds himself the prime suspect in an extensive FBI investiga- tion of smuggling, money laundering and murder. Overwhelming evidence mounts as Jack relies on two women, one of whom risks her life, to find corroborating evidence to his story and track down the only witness in his favor––a humpback whale.
