How to Embrace the Humor of Mid-Life Revealed in White Chair Day, New Release from First Steps Publishing

Joni Jesme’s debut book uncovers the humor behind growing older and the need to embrace the journey into mid-life and beyond with a smile. Stemming from a green trash can lid verbally mistaken as a white chair, Jesme turned that White Chair Day incident into a compilation of 40 fully-illustrated true stories revealing the humorous side of life.

White Chair Day by Joni Jesme
Available Now

FALCON HEIGHTS, MN. — About a week before a milestone birthday, Joni drove coworkers out for lunch. On the way back to the office, they came across a very large green, plastic garbage can lid in the middle of the street. Startled by the object, Joni Jesme blurted, “Oh no! There’s a ‘white chair’ in the road!!”

Yes, she said white chair. Her coworkers burst into laughter. “Joni, where did you get white chair from?” They continued to laugh for several days.

Joni had reached the point in her life when the wrong words flew out of her mouth. “Where’s the whatchamacallit?” And when she tried to find the correct word, it inexplicably vanished. She’d stepped across the threshold into a new, and sometimes humorous part of life. [Cue: Rod Serling] “That’s the signpost up ahead—your next stop, the White Chair Day Zone!”

From that moment, whenever Joni had one of those head scratching moments, she would explain to those around her, “I’m just having a White Chair Day.” Surprisingly, others shared their stories with her and White Chair Days was born.

A funny thing happens on our way to growing older. You come into your White Chair Days after an amusing voyage through life’s milestones. When you look for and enjoy the humor as you transition from one phase of life to another, reaching your White Chair Days will defy expectations, and life will be anything but dull.

Adorned with endearing illustrations, “OMG! I’m having a White Chair Day”is sure to delight readers of all ages, particularly those who call green lids “white chairs” and thingamajigs “whatchamacallits.”

PRESS RELEASE: NAM, The Story of a Generation (Vietnam) by Mel Smith

September 18, 2017 by SF Parrott Leave a Comment

| PRESS RELEASE | Nam the novel, Story of the Vietnam Generation

NOVELIST MEL SMITH GIVES READERS A “FULL DOSE” OF THE VIETNAM WAR EXPERIENCE IN NAM, THE Story of a Generation

GLENEDEN BEACH, Ore., Aug 9, 2017 — At one point in Mel Smith’s novel Nam, The Story of a Generation, Vietnam War veterans Joe and Cam ponder the perceptions of their service. “The World War II generation,” Joe says, “never appreciated what we did in Nam…. We didn’t fight hard enough. We didn’t support the government of the people…didn’t know the meaning of sacrifice…like they did in doubya, doubya two.” So unfair.

While Ken Burns explores Vietnam in his definitive documentary series this September, author Mel Smith does the same in his sweeping historical fiction novel Nam, Story of a Generation being released the same month by First Steps Publishing.

A Vietnam War veteran, Smith spent more than a decade researching and writing this riveting novel, intending to give readers a “full dose” of the Vietnam War era experience, both in the States and in-country. “The novel is about the Vietnam War, beginning to end, but it is also about commitments, patriotism, culture, Vietnamese history, and the fundamentals of American society—with a little romance thrown in,” he says.

“Smith’s effort is nothing short of extraordinary,” wrote David Aretha, editor of The Sixties Chronicle and books on the Vietnam War. “The story is emotional and heartfelt and feels 100 percent authentic. Most impressively, it covers all major aspects of the war: American culture before, during, and after the conflict; the various mind-sets of young men and their parents before they entered the war (and during and after); debates about the war’s purpose; in-country living, fighting, and friendships; death and war wounds—and coping with both afterward; the rich tapestry of the counterculture; the war from the perspective of Vietnamese fighters and civilians; the protest movement and veterans’ reactions to it; the effect the war had on veterans in the near aftermath as well as thirty years later. It’s a tremendous history lesson and thoroughly entertaining.”

Born in Helena, Montana in 1948, Mel Smith grew up in the hardscrabble neighborhood on the edge of town featured in NAM, The story of a Generation. Smith joined the Naval Reserve in the fall of 1966 and went “active” in the Navy in the summer of 1968. He served aboard two Navy destroyers, the U.S.S. TAYLOR DD-468 and the U.S.S. DEHAVEN DD-727 and pulled two WestPac tours to the war zone. He received an early out from active duty in the spring of 1970 as President Nixon trimmed the armed forces then serving. Smith attended Montana State University graduating with a B.S. in Film and Television, 1973. He founded AdSmith, an advertising agency, in 1981 which still operates today. He and wife Alane live in the greater Phoenix area of Arizona.

PRESS RELEASE: Dearest Minnie, A Sailor’s Story

July 31, 2017 by SF Parrott Leave a Comment

Collectible Postcards Sail Around the World Aboard Teddy Roosevelt’s Great White Fleet ~ New Historical Narrative by Leslie Compton

TALENT, OREGON (PRWEB) JULY 31, 2017

Leslie Compton’s newly released book, “Dearest Minnie, a Sailor’s Story,” is a wonderfully accurate portrayal of Teddy Roosevelt’s 43,000-mile, 14-month good will tour seldom told in depth in history books. Extrapolated from and including over 200 actual (collectible) postcards sent home to “Dearest Minnie,” this book is an engaging narrative as seen through the eyes of an enlisted sailor aboard the USS Virginia.

12 December 1907. One hundred ten years ago, Teddy Roosevelt’s Great White Fleet sailed into the history books. Comprised of sixteen battleships and manned by 14,000 sailors and marines under the command of Rear Admiral Robley “Fighting Bob” Evans, the American fleet set out from Hampton Roads, Virginia on 12 December 1907, to visit 20 ports on six continents before returning to Hampton Roads, Virginia on 22 February 1909.

“Dearest Minnie, a Sailor’s Story” is an engaging written and pictorial narrative about the battleships, the political climate, the animals aboard ship, the various cultures, the entertainment, the unexpected mishaps as well as the budding romance between a Virginia sailor and his “Dearest Minnie.” The full-color collectible postcard images follow the fleet as it sails to each port. Included in the book is a detailed description of each card and photo.

Considered as one of the greatest peacetime achievements in US Navy history, Dearest Minnie, a sailor’s story offers something for everyone: postcard collectors, history enthusiasts, and romantics. You only need a love for history and a desire to learn something new.

About the Author:

Retired professional musician, music teacher, elementary teacher and childbirth educator and has taught several courses on memoir writing. While researching the Great White Fleet, Compton wrote an article for the Post Card Collector. She is an instructor for a six-week course through OLLI about the Great White Fleet.
